Craig Hawkins über seinen El Bandito LEKKER:
This wine is very personal to us as the vineyard/farm belongs to the cousin of Carlas mother (Anna), and it is where she spent her early years growing up. When the vineyard was going to be pulled out to plant potatoes and rooibos tea, we asked if we could farm it to keep the connection going but also to see what kind of wine it produced as the soils are very unique and the vineyard is very isolated (being on the West Coast near Elands Bay). The resulting wine was astonishing, and we decided to only produce it in magnums as a way to keep it separate from our other wines. The label is a photo taken by our good friend David Retief and “lekker” in Afrikaans means “cool” or “nice”. In Norwegian it means the same thing and we had a group of passionate Norwegian sommeliers taste the wine back in 2017 and decided to bottle this wine exclusively for them, however from 2020 we are now releasing it to everybody.
VINIFICATION: Hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. Fermented/Aged in 1 x 500L old French barrel. No yeast (or other) inoculation or additives apart from a small amount of SO2 shortly before bottling. Ambient fermentation (the juice/ wine is not cooled). 100% malolactic fermentation. A clarifying filtration was done, not fined.
